Tsunami, Oregon Coast, My Story

Tsunami, Oregon Coast, My Story

At about 3 a.m. a loud siren penetrated my sleep and I thought it must be from police or an ambulance due to an accident nearby.  But the siren kept going and I realized it must be something else.  I looked out into the night and saw that some of my neighbors were getting into their cars and leaving.  There were voices and I heard someone saying "Hurry!"  I called one of my neighbors and he said "Turn on the TV, there's been a huge earthquake in Japan and we have a tsunami alert."  He said he had called the police and since we lived a mile and a half from the ocean they had said not to worry about evacuating.  But I was picturing tsunamis I'd seen on TV so I quickly got my 2 dogs and hopped into the car.  I drove toward Florence and saw a line of cars a block or more long waiting for gasoline at what might have been the only gas station open then.  At 126 I turned toward Mapleton, and remembered my neighbor had said not to wait out the tsunami near the Siuslaw River as it would be affected.  Fifteen miles inland I came to Mapleton.  There was steady traffic.  A little  farther I pulled into the Gingerbred Man Restaurant, surrounded by wilderness.  The news on the radio said that in Hawaii people in hotels were being moved to the 8th floor for safety.    Someone in the Gingerbred Man Restaurant turned on the lights around 5 am and waved a coffeepot out the front door.   The parking lot was full of people sitting in their cars. Many of us went in for awhile or had breakfast.  I walked my dogs.   After 8 am I began to drive back to Florence, and later went out to the Heceta Head Lighthouse at the elevated overlook to make some camcorder videos of the tsunami surges of water.

OOps, sorry I wasn't able to show the water receding again as announced on the video.
